Finding the right counsellor

Finding the right counsellor is an entirely personal process and unique for each person.   As a client I have experienced both finding the right fit and when it just didn’t feel right. What’s right for one person, isn’t always for another. Advice I often hear is to, “trust your gut”.  Counsellors often offer a consultation so that you can find out how they work, ask any questions, and get a feel for the relationship.

As well as feeling right, it’s also important to find a counsellor who is a member of a professional and ethical body that is a part of the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) Accredited Registers Programme.  One of these is the British Society of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which I am a registered member of.  In order to become so I have evidenced that I am competent, qualified, safe, and ethical.  The below poster produced by Counsellors Together UK is useful in giving you details of which bodies are part of the PSA Accredited Registers Programme.
